João Pessoa Local Travel Guide: An Interview with Sofia and Lucas

When I first arrived in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba State, Brazil, I expected beauty, but what I discovered was a city teeming with charm, culture, and hospitality.

To truly understand what makes João Pessoa a rising star and Booking.com’s number-one travel destination for 2025, I sat down with two locals, Sofia and Lucas. This love-driven couple—Sofia, a lawyer born and raised in João Pessoa, and Lucas, a travel vlogger who has explored over 50 countries—shared their personal insights into this enchanting city they call home.

A Romantic Getaway in Every Corner

“For us, João Pessoa is a dream,” Sofia began with a smile. “I’ve traveled a lot, but nothing compares to the romantic, laid-back charm of this city.” Lucas chimed in: “It’s one of the few places where you can start your day with a sunrise at Ponta do Seixas—the easternmost point in South America—and end it with a breathtaking sunset at Jacaré Beach, complete with live saxophone music.”

The couple described their typical day. “We love early mornings,” said Sofia. “The Cabo Branco Boulevard, closed to cars from 5 to 8 a.m., is a haven for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

You’ll find locals enjoying the beach breeze, playing volleyball, or working out at the open-air gym.” Lucas added, “It’s our favorite way to unwind, soaking in the quiet beauty of the Cabo Branco Beach.”

Hidden Gems and Historical Charm

While João Pessoa’s beaches are undoubtedly its star attraction, Sofia and Lucas revealed a deeper layer of its appeal: its historical sites. “The São Francisco Church is a must-visit,” Sofia said. “Its intricate baroque architecture, Portuguese tiles, and wooden doors take you back in time.”

For Lucas, the São Pedro Church Square is always a highlight. “It’s surrounded by brightly colored houses and historical gems like the former Hotel Globo. Behind it, there’s a hidden garden with a stunning view of the old village by the Sanhaua River. It’s a tranquil spot to reflect.”

The couple also mentioned that the government is working on restoring many historic buildings, making João Pessoa even more inviting for history buffs. “This is the place to step back in time and soak in Brazil’s heritage,” said Sofia.

Beaches Beyond the Ordinary

When asked about their favorite beaches, Sofia and Lucas couldn’t stop gushing about João Pessoa’s hidden gems.

  • Praia de Tambaba is perfect for couples. It’s quiet, with crystal-clear waters,” Sofia said.

  • “But if you want even more seclusion, drive south to Praia de Coqueirinho or Praia de Carapibus,” Lucas suggested. “Here, boutique pousadas offer an escape where you can completely unwind.”

For a unique experience, Lucas recommended Picãozinho, a reef area accessible only by boat during low tide. “You can snorkel or simply enjoy the serene waters. It’s a slice of paradise.”

Food, Culture, and Festivities

“João Pessoa isn’t just about beaches,” Sofia said passionately. “Our food culture is something every traveler should experience.”

She pointed me toward restaurants like Recanto do Picuí and Tabua de Carne, renowned for serving Carne de Sol, a local delicacy accompanied by cassava fries and rice with milk. “For a more upscale experience, try Gulliver, where you’ll find deliciously prepared meat dishes,” Lucas added.

During festivals, the city comes alive with music, dance, and cuisine. Sofia eagerly highlighted the upcoming Valentine’s Day Carnival in 2025. “It’ll be our first time celebrating carnival in February with a romantic twist, thanks to performances by famous Brazilian singers,” she said.

Outdoor Adventures and Eco-Friendly Escapes

For nature lovers, João Pessoa offers a range of eco-friendly activities. “The Parque Arruda Câmara, or ‘Bica,’ is perfect for a peaceful hike,” Lucas explained. “We also enjoy kayaking at Areia Vermelha, exploring its stunning reefs.”

The couple emphasized João Pessoa’s reputation as one of the greenest cities in the world. “It’s a haven for relaxation and wellness,” said Sofia. “From yoga on the beach to unwinding at boutique pousadas, you’ll find a rhythm that suits you.”

Shopping and Nightlife

No trip is complete without a little retail therapy. Sofia shared her favorite spot: Manaíra Shopping Mall. “It’s better than many malls I’ve visited in the US, with fashionable clothes at unbeatable prices. Plus, you’ll find amazing food options like Mangai and Santa Grelha.”

For this interview, we sat down at a local bar on a Tuesday evening. With a local DJ, airing cool sounds for an audience of all ages. Enjoying themselves and ofcourse some swinging brazilian party vibes.

At night, João Pessoa offers a relaxed vibe. “We love strolling the boulevard or enjoying live music at beachside bars,” said Lucas. “It’s a safe and crowd-free experience that’s rare in Brazil.”

Why João Pessoa is a Top Destination for 2025

Sofia and Lucas believe João Pessoa’s growing popularity stems from its balance of charm and tranquility. “It’s one of Brazil’s safest cities, making it ideal for families, solo travelers, and couples alike,” Sofia explained. “But it’s still crowd-free and budget-friendly, so you can experience luxury without the price tag.”

As we wrapped up our chat, Lucas had one final thought: “If you’re looking for the ultimate off-the-beaten-path destination with stunning beaches, rich history, and unmatched hospitality, João Pessoa should be at the top of your list. Trust us — it’s the hidden gem you’ve been dreaming of.”

Plan Your Visit

João Pessoa is more than a travel destination—it’s a journey through time, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re savoring local cuisine, exploring historical sites, or simply relaxing on a tranquil beach, this coastal paradise promises memories that last a lifetime.

Don’t wait—2025 is the year to discover João Pessoa, the Sun Gate of Brazil, while it remains a hidden treasure in South America’s travel landscape.
